URSB joins national launch of Human Development Report 2025 on AI implications
Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) representatives attended the national launch of the Human Development Report (HDR) 2025 titled “A Matter of Choice: People and Possibilities in the Age of AI” at Kyambogo University last week. The event highlighted the intersection between intellectual property protection and artificial intelligence advancement—a key focus area for URSB’s innovation support initiatives.
Dr. Thangavel Palanivel, Senior Economist at UNDP, presented findings revealing that 80% of students currently use AI for educational purposes, while Uganda has recently graduated to the medium Human Development Index (HDI) category. This achievement places Uganda among 10 African countries in this classification, signalling important development progress despite global concerns about stalling human development momentum.
URSB officials emphasised the bureau’s commitment to creating regulatory frameworks that protect innovation while enabling technological advancement. As AI adoption increases across Uganda, URSB’s role in safeguarding intellectual property while promoting innovation becomes increasingly critical.
The report’s findings about AI tools carrying biases and stereotypes underscored URSB’s ongoing work with Technology and Innovation Support Centres (TISCs) to promote responsible innovation across educational institutions and the private sector, ensuring Uganda’s development gains through technology remain inclusive and sustainable.
