Stakeholders’ Consultative Meeting on the Ratification of the Kampala Protocol
Uganda is advancing regional conversations on the proposed Kampala Protocol under the ARIPO framework aimed at strengthening copyright administration, enforcement, and commercialization across Africa.
The ongoing stakeholders’ Consultative Meeting on the Ratification of the Kampala Protocol was attended by legal experts, Collective Management Organisations (CMOs), Associations, academia, government institutions, and the creative industry, with a focus on how voluntary copyright registration can unlock greater protection, visibility, and economic opportunities for creators.
Copyright registration provides stronger proof of ownership, supports licensing and enforcement, and helps creators monetize their work across borders.
Key discussions highlighted:
âś… A regional copyright registration and notification database under ARIPO
âś… Improved cross-border enforcement and ownership verification
âś… Greater investor confidence in creative works
âś… Opportunities for regional collaborations, co-productions, and market access
âś… The future potential of using intellectual property as collateral for financing
As Uganda progresses consultations toward ratification and domestication of the protocol, stakeholders emphasized the need to strengthen Africa’s creative economy through cooperation, harmonisation, and innovation.
