Empowering Uganda’s future: Registrar General unveils Intellectual Property awareness initiative targeting young innovators

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), under the leadership of Registrar General Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, launched a transformative initiative known as UGYouth4IP last week.

The launch event took place at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre, Kololo and featured Hon. Dr. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi, the Minister of State for Youth and Children Affairs, as the Guest of Honour.

Ms. Kainobwisho opened the event by expressing her appreciation for Hon. Barugahara’s support and recognised government’s support for IP, by passing relevant laws and policies that support innovation and creation.

She noted that many young innovators who make up over 73% of the population lack knowledge on how to protect their creative works, which can significantly impede their ability to develop sustainable businesses and contribute to national development.

“Intellectual property rights such as patents, trademarks, copyrights, and industrial designs are powerful tools that can transform ideas into valuable assets,” Ms. Kainobwisho remarked. “We at URSB are dedicated to equipping young innovators with the knowledge and resources they need to safeguard their
creations.”

The UGYouth4IP initiative features a variety of educational components, including workshops, Technology Innovation Support Centres (TISCs), and targeted digital campaigns focused on enhancing youth awareness of IP issues.

Ms. Kainobwisho encouraged young Ugandans to fully leverage the available resources to protect their ideas and contribute significantly to the country’s socio-economic transformation.
