New Music Platform Opens More Earning Opportunities for Ugandan Creators

Ugandan musicians and other creators are set to benefit from a new income stream following the launch of the UgaTunes Caller Ring Back Tone (CRBT) platform in partnership with MTN Uganda.

The platform allows MTN subscribers to set Ugandan songs as their caller ringback tones, creating an opportunity for artistes and everyone involved in producing a song to earn royalties.

The launch comes at a time when Uganda is strengthening copyright administration through recent legal reforms spearheaded by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). Among the key changes is the recognition and use of split sheets, which clearly indicate how royalties are shared among songwriters, performers, producers and other contributors to a creative work.

Through split sheets, creators can now receive their rightful share of revenue generated from their works, including earnings from digital platforms such as caller ringback tones.

The launch brought together stakeholders from the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), creative and communications sectors, including MTN Uganda, UgaTunes, the Uganda Communications Commission and representatives from government. Discussions focused on ensuring that creators are fairly compensated for their work as Uganda’s creative industry continues to grow.

For URSB, the development is another step in translating copyright reforms into real opportunities for creators. It also highlights the growing role of copyright in helping creatives earn from their talent while protecting their intellectual property rights.

The platform is expected to contribute to a more sustainable and rewarding creative ecosystem in Uganda.
