URSB Backs Stronger IP Protection to Build Trust in Africa’s Digital Market
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) is calling for stronger intellectual property protection and closer cooperation among regulators to protect businesses, consumers and innovators as digital trade expands across Africa.
The call was made by Senior Registration Officer Denis Birungi, during a panel discussion on “Protecting Intellectual Property in the Digital Single Market” at the ninth KTA Africa Technology and Intellectual Property Symposium, held at Kampala Marriott Hotel on October 22–23, 2026.
The symposium, held under the theme “Building Africa’s Digital Single Market: The Role of Government and the Private Sector in Achieving Regional Integration,” brought together policymakers, legal experts, regulators and industry leaders to explore ways of making cross-border digital trade easier and safer.

During the discussion, Birungi highlighted the challenges of counterfeiting and intellectual property infringement, particularly as online platforms make it easier to sell goods and services across borders.
He emphasised the importance of combining intellectual property registration with effective enforcement, public awareness and cooperation among regulators, rights holders, law enforcement agencies and digital marketplace operators.
The discussions also explored how African countries can align enforcement approaches and strengthen cooperation as digital trade grows under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
URSB’s participation reinforces the importance of protecting intellectual property in building a trusted digital marketplace where legitimate businesses can grow, consumers can shop with confidence and innovators can benefit from their ideas.
