Acholi leaders urged to support new NIR system

Leaders and stakeholders in the Acholi sub-region have been urged to work together to ensure the successful implementation of the Non-Individual Register (NIR), a new system introduced by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).

Speaking during an engagement with stakeholders from the Acholi region at Bomah Hotel in Gulu City on Thursday, Peter Banya, the Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC) for Laroo-Pece Division, said the government is committed to operationalising the register to improve service delivery and accountability.

Banya called for collective responsibility among government institutions, civil society organisations, and the private sector to ensure the register achieves its intended goals.

“With URSB’s continued efforts to improve accessibility and efficiency in registration services, I am confident that this initiative will achieve its intended objectives,” he said.

The Non-Individual Register is part of URSB’s new mandate to establish and maintain a centralised database for all registered non-individual entities operating in Uganda.

Beatrice Lakot, a civil society member, said the issuance of a unique Entity Registration Number (ERN) will help organised farmer groups gain easier access to financing and government support programmes.

She noted that many farmer groups lack proper identification and legal backing, making it difficult for financial institutions to work with them.

The engagement attracted chief administrative officers, commercial officers, community development officers, civil society members, and private sector players from across Acholi.
