ARIPO Hails Uganda for Strengthening Creative Sector with New Copyright Law

The African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) congratulates Uganda on the passage of the Copyright & Neighbouring Rights Amendment Bill 2025, a “win for Africa’s creative economy”.

The congratulatory message was shared through ARIPO’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle, stating: “Congratulations to Uganda on the passage of the Copyright & Neighbouring Rights Amendment Bill 2025. ARIPO is encouraged by this progress and remains committed to providing support consistent with the Kampala Protocol on the Voluntary Registration of Copyright and Related Rights.”

The passage of this bill shows Uganda’s progress in strengthening its intellectual property framework and ensuring that creators are better protected and rewarded for their work. It also aligns with regional efforts to promote the effective use of copyright systems to drive economic growth.

ARIPO has worked closely with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau over the years to support the development of a strong copyright ecosystem. This partnership has focused on capacity building, policy alignment, and raising awareness about the importance of intellectual property rights.

In 2025, this collaboration was further demonstrated through the 4th African Regional Seminar on Copyright and Related Rights in the Audiovisual Sector held in Kampala. The seminar brought together policymakers, creators, and industry experts to advance discussions on copyright protection.

ARIPO remains encouraged by this progress and continues to support Uganda.
