MoSTI: Uganda, WIPO Deepen Ties to Boost Innovation and National Development
The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has welcomed renewed commitment to strengthening Uganda’s innovation ecosystem following a high-level meeting between government leaders and a visiting delegation from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
The engagement, held last week at the Ministry offices with key government leaders, included the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Hon. Norbert Mao; the URSB leadership, led by Board Chairman Rt. Hon. Ambassador Francis Butagira and Registrar General Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho; as well as officials from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, represented by Hon. Justine Kasule Lumumba, Minister of General Duties in the Office of the Prime Minister.

Discussions focused on the growing importance of Intellectual Property (IP) in shaping Uganda’s development agenda, particularly its role in stimulating innovation, supporting the creative sector, boosting competitiveness, and empowering scientists, entrepreneurs, and researchers to bring ideas to market.
The meeting emphasized Uganda’s commitment to collaborating with WIPO to accelerate the digital transformation of IP systems, expand capacity building, and promote a stronger, more inclusive innovation landscape.
URSB reaffirmed its dedication to working with both national and international partners, noting that effective IP protection and awareness will continue to be central to Uganda’s socio-economic transformation journey.
