URSB Engages in Global Training on AI and Copyright in London

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its impact on copyright were the focus at the WIPO Advanced Training in Copyright and Related Rights, held in London, UK, from 1st to 6th September 2025.

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) was represented by Mr. Wabugo Michael, Senior Registration Officer, who joined delegates from across the world to explore how emerging technologies are reshaping intellectual property protection.

Organized annually by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in partnership with the UK Intellectual Property Office and the British Copyright Council, the training brought together 15 participants from countries including Cambodia, Ukraine, Latvia, Kenya, Oman, Ghana, Nigeria, Tanzania, and Uganda.

This year’s program was designed to address the pressing challenges posed by AI in the copyright space, such as ownership of AI-generated works, protection of rights holders in the digital era, and the role of metadata in securing creators’ rights. Additional sessions examined Collective Management Organization (CMO) licensing and strategies to combat copyright infringement online.

Expert presentations were delivered by leading UK institutions, including the Society of Authors, the Performing Rights Society, PPL Collecting Society, and academics from Queen Mary University.

The knowledge gained will enable participants to help their national IP offices respond effectively to the evolving landscape of copyright in the digital economy. For Uganda, this training strengthens the bureau’s obligation to protecting creators while promoting innovation and fair use of technology.
