Board Chairman Rallies Universities to Drive Innovation at Bishop Stuart TISC Launch
The Board Chairman, Rt. Hon. Ambassador Francis K. Butagira has called on universities to take a leading role in turning research and innovation into practical solutions that can drive Uganda’s economic transformation.
Ambassador Butagira made the remarks during the launch of the Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) at Bishop Stuart University in Mbarara City, where he officiated as Chief Guest.
The launch ceremony brought together innovators, students, researchers, academia, government officials, and development partners in recognition of the growing role universities are playing in transforming local ideas into practical solutions for national development.

Ambassador Butagira emphasised the need to support young innovators and researchers through structured innovation systems that can help turn ideas into solutions for communities and industries.
“The future of Africa will depend greatly on how well we support innovation, research, and creativity among our young people. Universities are becoming powerful centres for solutions that can transform communities, industries, and economies. The launch of this TISC is therefore an investment in Uganda’s future,” he says.
He further called on universities to take a leading role in protecting ideas and supporting research that responds to challenges facing society.
“Universities must become centres where ideas are protected, nurtured, and transformed into solutions that improve lives and strengthen economies,” Ambassador Butagira added.
He described the establishment of the TISC at Bishop Stuart University as part of a wider effort to build a knowledge-driven economy supported by strong research and intellectual property systems.
