URSB Marks World IP Day 2026 with Focus on Sports and Innovation
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau has joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Intellectual Property Day 2026, highlighting the growing role of intellectual property in driving innovation, creativity, and economic growth in Uganda.
The celebrations, held at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre in Kampala, brought together government officials, innovators, students, and sports stakeholders to reflect on this year’s theme, “IP and Sports: Ready, Set, Innovate.”
The theme underscores how intellectual property supports the development of the sports industry through mechanisms such as broadcasting rights, sponsorships, merchandising, and protection of athletes’ image rights.
According to URSB, the annual event serves as a reminder that intellectual property is central to value creation across sectors, including sports, arts, and technology. The Deputy Registrar General – Registries, Mr. Ntale Mustapher, noted that protecting creativity ensures that innovators and athletes benefit from their work while contributing to national development.
Across Uganda, activities leading up to the day included engagements with sports federations, students, and legal professionals aimed at increasing awareness of intellectual property rights and encouraging their use in commercialising talent.
World IP Day is observed globally every April 26th to promote understanding of how intellectual property fuels innovation and creativity. In Uganda, URSB used the 2026 celebrations to call on individuals and institutions to embrace intellectual property as a tool for unlocking economic opportunities and strengthening the country’s creative and sporting industries.
