URSB Highlights Sports as Key Driver of Jobs and Growth
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has underscored the growing role of sports as a driver of jobs, investment, and national development.
Speaking at the World Intellectual Property Day celebrations on behalf of the Registrar General, Deputy Registrar General–Registries, Mr. Ntale Mustapher, said sports is no longer just entertainment but a serious economic sector with a wide-ranging impact.
He noted that sports create employment across several industries, including professional athletics, media and broadcasting, and hospitality. “From athletes and coaches to journalists, event organisers, and transport providers, sports supports livelihoods across the economy,” he said.

Mr. Mustapher added that the sector also promotes tourism, attracts foreign investment, and inspires youth engagement, making it a key pillar for national unity and growth.
He pointed to global projections showing the sports industry could grow into a multi-trillion-dollar sector, driven by innovation in broadcasting, streaming, and emerging technologies. He said Uganda must position itself to benefit from this growth.
The Deputy Registrar General also used the occasion to celebrate Uganda’s sporting heroes, including Olympic champion John Akii-Bua, long-distance star Joshua Cheptegei, and marathon winner Stephen Kiprotich, noting that their achievements place Uganda on the global map.
He emphasized the need to protect and commercialise sports through intellectual property, saying it is central to unlocking value in the sector.
Mr. Mustapher called on stakeholders to invest in protecting sports-related innovations and brands to realise the sector’s economic potential fully.
