URSB and UIA Partner to Advance Commercialisation of Innovative Banana Processing Technology
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) recently met with Professor George William Byarugaba Bazirake at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre to explore opportunities for commercialising an innovative banana processing technology.
Professor Bazirake is a registered innovator in URSB’s patent registry. The engagement was part of URSB’s broader efforts to support inventors in transforming protected intellectual property into commercially viable ventures that contribute to national development.
At the centre of the discussions was Professor Bazirake’s patented invention, “Method of Processing Fresh Vacuum Sealed (Matooke) Bananas” (Patent No. UG/P/2007/000001). The technology provides a practical solution for improving the preservation, storage, and marketability of fresh matooke – one of Uganda’s most widely consumed staple foods.

During the meeting, URSB facilitated the connection between the inventor and UIA to explore investment and commercialization pathways. Discussions focused on linking the technology to potential investors, identifying licensing opportunities, and promoting value addition within Uganda’s banana value chain.
URSB emphasized that supporting registered innovators is central to its mandate of promoting innovation and ensuring that intellectual property plays a meaningful role in economic growth. UIA, on the other hand, highlighted the potential of the technology to stimulate agro-processing, reduce post-harvest losses, and expand market opportunities for banana-based products.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to support Professor Bazirake in advancing the commercialization of the technology and bringing the innovation closer to market.
