WIPO Launches Game-Based IP Learning Project for Ugandan Youth
Uganda is reshaping how young people understand and use Intellectual Property (IP) following the launch of a new, interactive learning project by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The initiative, rolled out in partnership with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), makes Uganda the first pilot country in Africa, with plans to expand the model across East Africa and the wider continent.
Speaking at the launch, Emmanuel Rugomboka, a Counselor in WIPO’s Division for Africa, thanked the Registrar General and the URSB team for their strong partnership and commitment in organizing the program. He explained that the project goes beyond traditional classroom teaching by using games and practical activities to help young people connect IP with creativity, innovation, and business.

Mr. Rugomboka noted that many Ugandan youth are already building brands through digital platforms, creating content, and turning online engagement into income. He emphasized that understanding IP helps young innovators know what they own, how to protect it, and how to benefit from their ideas.
“Over the next two days, participants will learn how IP adds value to their businesses and innovations,” he said. They will also receive guidance on managing IP processes independently, reducing reliance on costly legal services.
Mr. Rugomboka encouraged participants to actively engage, stay open-minded, and use the experience to strengthen their entrepreneurial journeys. He concluded by welcoming them to learn, innovate, and confidently take their next steps.
