Uganda First in Africa to Launch “IP in a Box” Game Lab for Young Innovators
Uganda on Thursday launched the “IP in a Box” Game Lab, making history as the first African country to adopt the innovative Play, Learn and Protect model aimed at empowering young creators with essential skills to develop, manage, and safeguard their intellectual property (IP).
The initiative was unveiled last week by the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
It is designed to demystify intellectual property concepts such as trademarks, patents, and copyrights through an engaging and gamified learning experience tailored for youth.

The gamification project is also designed to bridge the knowledge gap by introducing five custom-developed IP games that simulate real-life business challenges.
Through these activities, participants encounter scenarios such as competition, copying risks, disclosure mistakes, and strategic decision-making. The approach leverages Africa’s long tradition of learning by doing, making the sessions not only interactive but also culturally relevant.
Commissioner for Intellectual Property, Mr. Robert Mugabe, emphasised the broader impact of the initiative, saying, “We call it IP in a Box, but the truth is this: intellectual property can never fit in a box. The moment you open it, you realise how big and limitless the world of ideas really is.”
The Game Lab is expected to strengthen Uganda’s youth-led innovation ecosystem by promoting early awareness of IP rights, supporting creative industries and aligning with national goals to boost innovation.
