URSB cracks down on counterfeit goods with court-ordered destruction
The Compliance and Enforcement Unit at the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) executed three court orders last week to dispose of infringing items. This action involved destroying exhibits related to concluded cases of: Uganda vs. Abindyamu Constance, Uganda vs. Kananura Johnson, and Uganda vs. Wavamuno Brian.
The trial magistrate ordered the convicts to bear the costs of destroying the counterfeit Total and Shell lubricants, as well as JIK products.
The destruction took place at a recycling plant located in Nabuti Cell, Mukono District, with consideration for environmental protection.
The shredding exercise serves as a public statement of URSB’s commitment to enforcing intellectual property rights and promoting respect for these rights.
Counterfeiting remains a significant issue despite ongoing efforts. Institutions continue to combat counterfeit trade while remaining vigilant in protecting consumers, enforcing intellectual property rights, and maintaining market integrity.
