URSB MEETS WITH UPRS CEO TO DISCUSS MOU COMPLIANCE AND ROYALTIES FOR CREATORS
On 12th February 2025, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) held a meeting with Morrine Sharon Nassuna, CEO of the Uganda Performing Right Society (UPRS), to review compliance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed between the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and UPRS. The MOU, signed on 16th June 2021, set out terms for broadcasters to pay royalties to UPRS members based on concessional rates for the use of their musical works.
The meeting, chaired by James Tonny Lubwama, Manager of Patents and Industrial Designs at URSB, included a report from UPRS on broadcaster compliance since the MOU’s signing. The discussions focused on enhancing compliance strategies to ensure that broadcasters meet their obligations, thus increasing royalties collected for creators.
A follow-up meeting is scheduled for 19th February 2025, where UPRS and the Uganda Federation of Movie Industry (UFMI) will address outstanding issues and outline steps for the MOU’s continued implementation. This collaboration highlights URSB’s commitment to protecting creators’ interests and improving royalty collection in Uganda.
