UNSA, IP Office Join Hands to Empower Students with Innovation Skills

Students across Uganda are set to benefit from increased awareness of intellectual property (IP) following a new partnership between the Uganda National Students Association (UNSA) and the Intellectual Property Office.

The collaboration was agreed upon during a strategic meeting held on April 2, 2026, bringing together student leaders and IP officials to plan how best to introduce IP education in schools.

The initiative, known as the IP in Schools Project, aims to equip learners with the knowledge to identify, protect, and benefit from their ideas.

UNSA leaders welcomed the partnership and pledged to mobilise students across the country to take part in awareness campaigns. They noted that many young innovators often miss out on opportunities simply because they lack knowledge of how to protect their work.

The URSB team emphasised that early exposure to intellectual property helps build a culture of creativity and responsible use of ideas. They said students who understand IP are better positioned to turn their innovations into meaningful ventures.

As part of the partnership, UNSA leaders will participate in the upcoming World IP Day 2026 celebrations, where students will showcase how innovation can drive development. A specialised training session for student leaders is also scheduled for May 2026.

The initiative offers a hopeful path for nurturing informed, confident young innovators ready to contribute to Uganda’s future.
