URSB, UIA Agree Roadmap to Formalise Over 3,000 SMEs on National Portal

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has agreed to a set of concrete actions with the Uganda Investment Authority (UIA) to formalise over 3,000 Small and Medium Enterprises profiled on UIA’s National SME Portal, following UIA’s proposal for a strategic partnership between the two institutions.

The engagement, held on 23rd July 2026 at the UBFC Level 1 Meeting Room 1, brought together officials from both agencies to explore how UIA’s outreach through the portal could be combined with URSB’s registration services to bring more businesses into the formal economy.

Speaking during the meeting, Ms. Stella Kakwezi, Assistant Commissioner, SIMPO, said URSB was ready to work with UIA to formalise the SMEs on its platform. “As URSB, our mandate is to formalise the economy,” she said.

The UIA and URSB team, led by Assistant Commissioner, Registration Services, Ms. Stella Kakwezi Olimi, mapped out a strategic partnership in areas of mutual interest.

Mr. Richard Nuwenyesiga, Director Domestic Investment at UIA, took the meeting through the Authority’s Digital Investment Management System (DIMS), currently at 50% completion, which is already being used to profile SMEs and connect them to a marketplace for manufacturing and agro-processing products.

The two institutions agreed on a clear way forward: UIA will request an MDA account on URSB’s e-Registry and share details of 3,000 SME clients for follow-up registration, while re-engineering its portal to link directly with URSB for validation of Business Registration Numbers. UIA also committed to inviting URSB to the Kasese Tourism Investment Forum in August, where the Bureau will hold business registration clinics for prospective investors.
