URSB empowers Busitema and IUIU University researchers with patent search training

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), through the Directorate of Intellectual Property, last Wednesday held a Patent Search Clinic at Busitema University, targeting researchers, innovators, and students to enhance their understanding of patent systems, intellectual property rights, and innovation protection.

The one-day clinic held at the Busitema University Campus in Tororo aimed to equip participants with skills in conducting patent searches, identifying existing technologies, and understanding the patent filing process.

This initiative is part of URSB’s broader mission to support innovators in securing their intellectual property (IP) rights and fostering a culture of research-driven development.

Busitema University researchers welcomed the initiative, noting that intellectual property awareness is crucial for advancing research and translating academic innovations into commercial solutions. The university administration expressed its commitment to working with URSB to foster innovation and strengthen intellectual property education among students and researchers.

The Patent Search Clinics are part of URSB’s ongoing efforts to support research institutions, strengthen Uganda’s intellectual property ecosystem, and enhance the country’s competitiveness in innovation and technology development.

Similarly, a team from URSB last week held strategic meeting with officials from the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) to discuss the establishment of additional Technology Innovation Support Centres (TISCs) and the organisation of a workshop on patent knowledge.

The meeting held at the IUIU Campus in Mbale City focused on enhancing access to patent information, fostering innovation, and strengthening intellectual property (IP) awareness, is part of URSB’s broader mandate to support research institutions, universities, and innovators in protecting and commercialising their ideas.

The university was represented by Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Dr. Jamil Serwanga, as well as Dr. Maimuna Aminah Nimulola, Director of Research, Publications, and Innovation while URSB’s representatives included Abraham Ageet, Steven Baryevuga, Eunice Agoro and Rogers Bob Lumu.

URSB officials emphasised the role of TISCs in providing innovators with access to high-quality technology information and related services, enabling them to create, protect, and manage intellectual property rights effectively.
