Uganda’s youth urged to leverage Intellectual Property for economic advancement – Board Chairman
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) Board Chairman, H.E. Amb. Francis Butagira has called on Ugandan youth to embrace intellectual property (IP) as a powerful tool for transforming their creative potential into economic success.
Speaking during the UGYOUTH4IP Campaign on youth empowerment through IP education, Amb. Butagira underscored the strategic importance of IP in unlocking Uganda’s socio-economic development.
“It gives me great pleasure to join you today to discuss a vital topic: Empowering Youth through Intellectual Property Education and Awareness,” he began.
Amb. Butagira emphasised that while Uganda’s youth are full of creativity and innovation, many lack the awareness and knowledge needed to protect their ideas, inventions, and brands.
“Young people are Uganda’s greatest asset. They are full of creativity and potential which, if protected and nurtured, can drive Uganda’s socio-economic transformation,” he remarked.
He urged the youth to understand and utilize IP tools such as trademarks, patents, copyrights, and industrial designs, stressing that these can turn ideas into valuable assets and stimulate national development.
“At URSB, we are committed to supporting young innovators – by providing the knowledge and tools needed to safeguard their work,” he said, encouraging attendees to ask questions, seek opportunities, and begin their journey toward protected and profitable innovation. “Remember,” he concluded, “protecting your ideas today ensures their success tomorrow.”
