URSB to Join Africa Copyright and Collective Management Day
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) will join the rest of the continent in marking Africa Copyright and Collective Management Day on 12 September, an annual event that celebrates and promotes the role of Collective Management Organisations (CMOs) in protecting creative rights.
The day, first established in 2017 by ARIPO Member States in partnership with the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers, CISAC, has been celebrated annually since 2018 on September 14, to emphasize the importance of copyrights and collective rights management in Africa. It acts as a platform to raise awareness, promote collaboration, and encourage fair compensation for creators whose work fuels the creative economy.
As the office in charge of CMOs in Uganda, URSB will take part in the observance, recognising the central role CMOs play in licensing creative works, collecting royalties, and distributing payments to rights-holders. By doing so, CMOs ensure that artists, authors, performers, and producers receive the benefits of their work while their intellectual property is safeguarded.
URSB’s participation will shine a light on the systems that help protect creators and sustain Uganda’s growing creative sector. The day is also expected to spark conversations on best practices in rights management, accountability in royalty distribution, and opportunities for creators to engage with collective licensing.
By joining the celebration, URSB outlines the importance of collective rights management as a tool for strengthening the creative industries and ensuring that those who generate art and culture are recognized and rewarded.
