Uganda to Host 4th African Regional Seminar on Copyright in the Audio-Visual Sector
Uganda will take center stage in Africa’s creative economy this month as it hosts the 4th African Regional Seminar on Copyright and Related Rights in the Audio-visual Sector in Kampala.
Scheduled for September 10th to 11th, 2025, at the Onomo Hotel, the seminar will be presided over by Hon. Norbert Mao, Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, as Chief Guest. The event is jointly organized by the African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) and Fundación AISGE, in collaboration with the Global Audio-visual Alliance (GAVA), the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB).
The two-day gathering will bring together Audio-visual Collective Management Organizations (CMOs), copyright offices from ARIPO member states, and representatives from Nigeria and South Africa. Uganda follows Zimbabwe and Zambia, which hosted the previous editions in 2022 and 2023.
By hosting this international conference, Uganda features its growing role as a regional hub for intellectual property discussions and creative industry growth. The seminar will focus on the role of CMOs, the importance of copyright registration, and strategies to ensure fair remuneration for audio-visual creators.
Key outcomes are expected to include stronger regulation of CMOs, wider recognition of the economic value of copyright, and increased awareness among industry leaders about protecting creative works.
With Minister Mao leading the opening, Uganda confirms its readiness to safeguard intellectual property and champion the growth of Africa’s audio-visual sector.
