Jazz Maestro Isaiah Katumwa Meets Registrar General, Calls for Stronger Support to the Creative Industry
Renowned Ugandan jazz musician Isaiah Katumwa last week paid a courtesy visit to the Registrar General, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre (UBFC), and their discussions centered on strengthening the protection of intellectual property (IP) rights in the creative industry.
As the national Intellectual Property Office, URSB plays a critical role in safeguarding the work of artists, musicians, writers, and other creators by ensuring their innovations and creative expressions are legally protected. Katumwa’s visit highlights the importance of collaboration between the creative sector and regulatory bodies in building a supportive Arts ecosystem.
During the meeting, the Registrar General shared insights on supporting the creative economy, about protecting artistic works through copyright, trademarks, and related IP rights, ensuring creators can fully benefit from their talent and innovation.
Arts are a key part of our economy and culture, and hence URSB ensures to create an enabling environment where creativity thrives and artists receive the recognition and protection they deserve.
Katumwa welcomed URSB’s initiatives, describing IP protection as the backbone of a sustainable creative industry. He encouraged fellow artists to take advantage of available services to secure their works.
The visit highlighted the ongoing efforts to engage directly with stakeholders in the creative sector, raise awareness about IP rights, and contribute to the growth of Uganda’s cultural and creative economy.
