URSB, INTA to Roll Out Joint IP Capacity Building and Policy Engagement Initiatives
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and the International Trademark Association (INTA) are set to strengthen their partnership with a renewed focus on advancing intellectual property (IP) awareness, enforcement, and policy engagement across Uganda.
Following a recent engagement between URSB and the INTA, attended by Hon. Norbert Mao, the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, both institutions committed to expanding collaboration in the field of trademarks and broader IP protection.
The meeting that took place on the side-lines of the Uganda Law Society TechFest happening at Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo featured Mr. Tat-Tienne Louembe, Chief Representative Officer for Europe and Intergovernmental Organizations at the International Trademark Association. It was led by Registrar General Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, who emphasized the significant achievements attained thanks to the proactive leadership of URSB.
URSB presented recent initiatives undertaken to enhance trademark registration, enforcement, and public awareness, earning recognition from INTA for its growing influence in the region’s IP ecosystem.
The INTA Chief Representative expressed interest in organizing a joint work plan that includes sensitization seminars for trademark examiners, workshops for judicial officers, and training for customs officials on the role of IP in trade enforcement.
Additionally, sessions exploring the nexus between IP and finance, as well as Uganda’s high-level participation in the INTA Annual Meeting, have been placed under consideration.
A forward-looking proposal was also tabled to establish a Parliamentary IP/Trademark Caucus. This would create a structured platform helping embed IP more deeply into national policy and economic development strategies.
Both parties, with the guidance of the Minister of the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs will now work towards refining the collaboration framework and finalising the joint activity calendar.
