URSB, KIU Partner to Boost Intellectual Property Awareness and Innovation in Higher Education
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and Kampala International University (KIU) last week launched a strategic collaboration to strengthen the link between academia and industry in promoting intellectual property (IP), innovation, and research commercialization.
On 31st July 2025, a delegation from the bureau visited Kampala International University’s main campus for a high-level engagement aimed at deepening cooperation in areas of IP education, innovation support, and curriculum development.
The meeting was attended by key university officials, including Dr. Mundu Mustapha, Deputy Vice Chancellor – Research, Finance and Administration; Dr. Kisubi Esther, Dean, School of Law; and other senior faculty members. The URSB team was led by Mr. Ageet Abraham, Senior Registration Officer, accompanied by the intellectual property department team.
The discussions focused on practical ways to promote intellectual property rights among students. Agreed outcomes include specialized training sessions, internship placements, business clinics at KIU, support for innovation competitions, and guidance in developing an IP policy.
A major highlight of the partnership is the commitment to integrate intellectual property into the university curriculum, working closely with the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to ensure relevance and compliance.
This collaboration will enable the bureau to build a culture of innovation and formalization by working with higher learning institutions. For KIU, it presents an opportunity to equip students with practical skills in IP management and contribute to national development through research and innovation.
