URSB, INTA to Roll Out Joint IP Capacity Building and Policy Engagement Initiatives
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and the International Trademark Association (INTA) are set to strengthen their partnership with a renewed focus on advancing intellectual property (IP) awareness, enforcement, and policy engagement across Uganda.
Following a recent engagement between URSB and the INTA, both institutions committed to expanding collaboration in the field of trademarks and broader IP protection. The meeting featured Tat-Tienne Louembe, Chief Representative Officer for Europe and Intergovernmental Organizations at the International Trademark Association. It was led by Deputy Registrar General Mr. Alex Anganya, who emphasized the significant achievements attained thanks to the proactive leadership of URSB.
URSB presented recent initiatives undertaken to enhance trademark registration, enforcement, and public awareness, earning recognition from INTA for its growing influence in the region’s IP ecosystem.
The INTA expressed interest in organizing a joint work plan that includes sensitization seminars for trademark examiners, workshops for judicial officers, and training for customs officials on the role of IP in trade enforcement. Additionally, sessions exploring the nexus between IP and finance, as well as Uganda’s high-level participation in the INTA Annual Meeting, are under consideration.
A forward-looking proposal was also tabled to establish a Parliamentary IP/Trademark Caucus. This would create a structured platform helping embed IP more deeply into national policy and economic development strategies.
Both parties are now working to schedule a follow-up meeting in mid-August 2025 to refine the collaboration framework and finalize the joint activity calendar.
