URSB, Chamber of Commerce Forge New Partnership to Boost Trademark and Geographical Indication Registrations
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) and the Uganda National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UNCCI) have announced a collaborative campaign aimed at increasing trademark and geographical indication registrations among Ugandan businesses.
The initiative was formalized during a strategic meeting held on July 28, 2025, at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre, where the URSB team, led by Assistant Commissioner for Registration Services, Mr. Allan Kakungulu, engaged with Mr. Francis Oundo, Secretary General of UNCCI, to discuss the campaign’s objectives and strategies.
The meeting centered on planning a national intellectual property (IP) awareness campaign targeting UNCCI members, with a focus on educating businesses about the economic value of protecting their brands and origin-based products through trademark and geographical indication registrations.
Key initiatives outlined include: mobilizing participants from across Uganda’s business sectors, delivering training sessions on IP processes and benefits, engaging the media to amplify messaging, and showcasing success stories of businesses that have grown through IP protection.
The pilot awareness event is scheduled to take place between the third week of August and the first week of September 2025 at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre Auditorium. Weekly coordination meetings will begin on Wednesday, 6th August 2025.
With a target of 200 new trademark registrations, the campaign marks a hands-on partnership between the bureau and UNCCI to foster formalization, brand protection, and economic empowerment for Ugandan enterprises in local and international markets.
