UGYOUTH4IP Campaign: Registrar General’s Report fronts empowerment of youth through IP education
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) recently launched the UGYouth4IP campaign, a pivotal initiative aimed at transforming how young Ugandans engage with intellectual property (IP).
The campaign, a brainchild of the Registrar General, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho has ignited creativity among the youth, equipping them with vital knowledge and resources to protect and monetise their
innovative ideas.
In the Registrar General’s report titled ‘Report on UGYOUTH4IP: Youth Engagement Activity,’ the significant impact of the campaign on fostering entrepreneurship and protecting innovations among one of the world’s youngest populations is highlighted.
On 9th April 2025, over 130 young innovators, students, and entrepreneurs gathered at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre (UBFC) for a key engagement event themed “Empowering Youth through Intellectual Property Education and Awareness.”
Officiated by State Minister for Youth and Children Affairs, Hon. Balaam Barugahara, the gathering emphasised the importance of IP in enhancing competitiveness and promoting local content.
The event marked the official launch of the UGYouth4IP initiative, conceived during the WIPO–CIPO Executive Training Programme attended by the Registrar General in October 2024.
The campaign addresses the underutilisation of IP rights among the youth, who represent over 22.7% of Uganda’s population aged 18 to 30. It aims to enhance their ability to navigate and leverage IP for commercial success. The launch event featured expert presentations on fundamental IP concepts, inspiring success stories, and discussions on branding and IP strategy.
As the UGYouth4IP campaign gains momentum, it represents a transformative movement dedicated to empowering Ugandan youth to realise their creative potential and secure their futures in an evolving innovation landscape.
