“By minimising losses, we maximise opportunities” – URSB champions risk-awareness culture
“Risk management isn’t just about avoiding pitfalls; it’s about unlocking potential. The future of URSB depends on how well we navigate uncertainty today,” remarked Mr. Alex Anganya, Deputy Registrar General (DRG), as he officially opened a specialised two-day risk management training at Esella Country Hotel in Kampala on 15th to 16th 2025.
The comprehensive programme was designed to strengthen the Internal Audit Department’s capacity in identifying, assessing, and managing institutional risks as part of URSB’s broader strategy to embed a culture of proactive risk awareness across all organisational levels.
Mr. Anganya emphasised that a sound risk management framework is vital to enhancing operational efficiency and achieving long-term strategic goals. “By implementing a robust risk framework, we aim to minimise potential losses and maximise opportunities for URSB,” he stated.
The training was led by Facilitator Francis Can, Director of Professional Training at the Tanzania Institute of Project Management, who focused on essential components of risk management. Mr. Can stressed the critical role of compliance and audit functions, highlighting the necessity of a solid framework of laws, policies, and regulations.
“Risks occur unexpectedly, and they impact your work. However, this does not mean we run away; we find a way of dealing with the risk,” Mr. Can remarked during the sessions.
Participants were equipped with vital skills in risk identification, assessment, and mitigation strategies, with particular emphasis on developing a comprehensive risk appetite statement as a guiding tool.
“As management, we are dedicated to supporting your professional development and ensuring you are equipped to collaborate effectively with other departments to promote risk management practices throughout the organisation,” Mr. Anganya added.
This initiative reflects URSB’s commitment to continuous professional development, institutional resilience, and meeting stakeholder expectations while safeguarding organisational interests.
