Registrar General calls for integration of IP education at Makerere University
In a groundbreaking seminar at Makerere University, leaders from the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) united to advocate for the integration of Intellectual Property (IP) education into the university’s curriculum.
Held in the Makerere Council Room, the event that brought together the university’s top management emphasised the critical need to nurture innovation and entrepreneurship among students.
Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, the Registrar General, underscored Makerere’s pivotal role in this educational revolution. “As a leading university, Makerere must be a starting point. You have the support to protect the invaluable knowledge generated here,” she stated, highlighting the university’s unique position to influence the future of IP education in Uganda.
Kainobwisho urged the institution to develop specialised courses focused on ownership, utilisation, protection, and commercialisation of IP. “We need to position IP in academia,” she emphasised, calling for a comprehensive understanding of IP to empower students and researchers.
Dr. Byson C. Sabola from ARIPO reinforced this message, noting that effective IP management is essential for transforming ideas into marketable products. “Imagine the impact if every student could recognise and protect their innovations!” he exclaimed.
Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, Makerere’s Vice Chancellor, echoed these sentiments, asserting that equipping students with the tools to navigate IP complexities is vital. With proposals to mainstream IP education across curricula, this initiative aims to empower future innovators, ensuring that Uganda’s rich intellectual resources are harnessed for economic growth and development.
