Step-by-Step Guide to Copyright Registration in Uganda

A. Step-by-Step Guide to Copyright  or Neighbouring  Right Registration in Uganda

Copyright in Uganda is governed by the Copyright and Neighboring Rights Act, Cap 222. While copyright protection is automatic upon the creation of an original work, registration provides official recognition and proof of ownership.

Step 1: Fill in the application form online

    • Provide necessary application information via this link 

Step 2: Assessment and payment of registration fees

    • Fill an assessment form from the URA portal  under Non Tax Revenue at UGX 50,000  and make payment.
    • Submit the works and proof of payment to copyright@ursb.go.ug.

Step 3: Receive Certificate

  • Once approved, a Certificate of Registration will be issued.

 

B. Step-by-Step Guide to  Copyright or Neighbouring  Right Search in Uganda

According to the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Regulations, 2025, you can request for a Search in the Copyright Registry.

Step 1: Assessment and payment of Search fees

    • Fill an assessment form from the URA portal  under Non Tax Revenue at UGX 35,000  and make payment.

Step 2: Submit a request for a Search

Step 3: Receive Search Report

  • Once approved, a Search Report and 3 certified copies of the Copyright Registration Certificate will be issued.
  • Any extra copies will be at an extra charge of UGX 10,000.
