Makerere University, URSB to Introduce Master’s Program in Intellectual Property

To bridge the gap between innovation and legal protection in Africa, Makerere University School of Law (SOL), in partnership with the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB), is developing a Master’s Degree program in Intellectual Property (IP).

The proposed program was discussed last week on June 18, 2025, during a high-level meeting held in the School of Law Board Room at Makerere University. The meeting was attended by senior officials from URSB, faculty members from Makerere University, intellectual property experts, and development partners.

The initiative marks a pioneering step, introducing the first IP master’s program of its kind in Uganda, crafted to meet the increasing demand for specialized legal expertise in a knowledge-based economy.

It envisions a market-driven, multidisciplinary curriculum to nurture a new generation of IP professionals capable of protecting and advancing African innovation on the global stage. The program will emphasize simplicity, accessibility, and practical relevance, with a focus on sectors such as agriculture, artificial intelligence, energy, and mining.

With a strong focus on contextual relevance, the program aims to create direct local impact. Both institutions underscored the role of IP education in driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and legal reform, positioning Uganda as a regional hub for intellectual property capacity building and thought leadership.
