URSB conducts IP training for research coordinators at IUIU Mbale Campus

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) hosted a specialised Training of Trainers workshop last week at the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) Mbale Campus, focusing on intellectual property (IP) capacity building for innovation advancement.

The two-day programme targeted university research coordinators, equipping them with essential knowledge and tools through the Technology and Innovation Support Centres (TISC) initiative. The workshop aimed to create a sustainable knowledge transfer system where trained coordinators can subsequently guide faculty members and students in protecting their innovations and research outputs.

URSB representatives delivered comprehensive sessions covering patent searches, copyright protection, trademark registration, and strategies for commercialising university innovations. Participants engaged in practical exercises demonstrating how to navigate IP databases and prepare proper documentation for various forms of intellectual property protection.

“This training marks a significant step in strengthening the innovation ecosystem at IUIU,” noted Ms. Eunice Agoro, URSB Mbale Regional Office representative. “By empowering research coordinators with IP knowledge, we’re creating multiplier effects that will benefit the entire academic community.”

The initiative forms part of URSB’s ongoing efforts to establish effective TISC networks across Ugandan educational institutions, promoting a culture of innovation protection and commercialisation within the country’s growing research and development sector.
