Emotional Intelligence takes centre stage at Registrar General’s Fireplace

A recent workplace gathering put the spotlight on emotional intelligence with a compelling presentation by renowned expert Dr. Sabrina Bakeera Kitaka. The senior lecturer, Makerere University, honorary consultant, and author of the Ugandan best seller “The Real Pursuit of Excellence” delivered insightful
perspectives on this critical professional skill.

Dr. Kitaka opened the session by emphasising that emotional intelligence—not IQ—often determines professional success. Through personal anecdotes, including remaining calm during a distressing situation, Dr. Kitaka illustrated emotional intelligence in action.

“Understanding yourself and managing relationships with others is fundamental to workplace effectiveness,” noted Dr. Kitaka, highlighting the four key components: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management skills.

The presentation delved into the science behind emotional reactions, explaining how the frontal lobe enables rational thinking. Dr. Kitaka emphasised that emotional intelligence scores highest among effective managers and encouraged participants to identify their emotional triggers for better self-regulation.

Her practical advice incorporated holistic approaches to emotional well-being, including nutrition, exercise, and adequate sleep. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A where attendees received guidance on handling unempathetic colleagues, navigating workplace stress, and developing greater cultural awareness.

“Gratitude and emotional quotient are essential ingredients for success,” Dr. Kitaka concluded, leaving participants with strategies to immediately enhance their workplace interactions.
