URSB, Kyambogo University Explore Partnership to Boost Innovation

The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) last week hosted the Innovation Advisor at the Faculty of Engineering and Technology and Technology and Innovation Support Centre (TISC) Coordinator at Kyambogo University, Ms. Mercy Kitimbo, for a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening collaboration in promoting innovation and intellectual property (IP).

The meeting, held at the Uganda Business Facilitation Centre (UBFC), focused on expanding joint efforts to support innovators, particularly within academic institutions.

Ms. Kitimbo highlighted ongoing work to coordinate IP activities at Kyambogo University, noting the growing need to equip students and researchers with knowledge on protecting and commercialising their ideas.

She also shared her recent recognition by the World Intellectual Property Organization, where she represented women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in Kigali, Rwanda, following her nomination by URSB.

URSB, Uganda’s national IP office, continues to play a central role in supporting innovation through initiatives such as TISCs, which provide access to patent information, training, and guidance on IP protection for researchers and innovators.

The engagement resolved to expand IP awareness beyond the Faculty of Engineering to other faculties, including Agriculture, Vocational Studies, and Industrial Design.

Both parties expressed commitment to deepening collaboration to strengthen the innovation ecosystem and ensure more young innovators benefit from IP protection and commercialization support.
