URSB Congratulates Daren Tang on Nomination for Second Term as WIPO Director General
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) has extended warm congratulations to Daren Tang following his nomination for a second six-year term as Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO).
Mr. Tang’s nomination by WIPO’s Coordination Committee on February 12, 2026, reflects strong global confidence in his leadership, and will be confirmed at a WIPO extraordinary session on April 21, 2026.
Uganda actively participated in the nomination session and was represented by H.E Ambassador Marcel Robert Tibaleka, Permanent Representative at the Permanent Mission in Geneva, URSB Registrar General, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, and Ms. Joy Zoe Kirunda, First Secretary (Intellectual Property) at the Permanent Mission in Geneva. From 3rd – 5 th December 2025, Mr. Daren Tang made a landmark visit to Uganda during which he officially launched the “IP in Schools” initiative, aiming to integrate intellectual property education into the school curriculum and nurture a new generation of innovators.
The visit also reinforced WIPO’s support for Uganda’s expanding IP ecosystem, including youth empowerment, stronger IP frameworks and commercialisation opportunities. The IP in Schools initiative is seen as transformative, introducing students early to subjects like patents, trademarks and creative thinking, bridging the gap between academic learning and real-world innovation.
URSB believes Mr. Tang’s second term will galvanise this initiative and further strengthen cooperation between Uganda and WIPO, unlocking opportunities for enhanced IP education, technical support and economic growth.
