Jazz Legend Isaiah Katumwa’s Global Success Celebrated as URSB Registers His Copyright Works
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) presented a copyright registration certificate to renowned jazz maestro Isaiah Katumwa last week, officially securing his musical works under Uganda’s intellectual property framework.
This milestone highlights the significance of copyright in protecting the valuable contributions of Ugandan creatives and fostering their ongoing success, both domestically and internationally.
Isaiah Katumwa, widely celebrated as Uganda’s father of jazz and a key figure in the country’s cultural landscape, has garnered acclaim on stages across the world.

His return to Uganda in 2025 was marked by extraordinary performances, including at the inaugural DFCU Jazz in the Pearl Festival where he headlined alongside Grammy-winning American saxophonist Kirk Whalum at the Kampala Serena Hotel. The sold-out festival was hailed as a landmark moment for Uganda’s music scene, showcasing the power of jazz to unite audiences and elevate the nation’s artistic profile.
Earlier in the year, Katumwa also held his “30 Years of Jazz” anniversary concert, celebrating three decades of musical excellence and mentorship.
In receiving his copyright registration, Katumwa praised the role of intellectual property in protecting creativity and empowering artists to thrive globally.
URSB’s support underscores Uganda’s commitment to nurturing its creative industries and ensuring that artists receive the recognition and legal protection they deserve.
