IP can be simple, says Commissioner IP urging communities to embrace simplified IP Learning
The Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) is strengthening efforts to make Intellectual Property (IP) easy to understand and use, through the recently concluded IP in a Box training programme conducted with support from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).
Speaking during the training, the Commissioner for Intellectual Property, Mr. Robert Mugabe, said the IP in a Box concept was created to simplify IP and remove the fear often associated with it. He explained that many people see IP as too technical, yet it can be broken down into simple, practical ideas.

“We ask ourselves why IP is in a box and not a basket. The idea is simple. Intellectual Property can be condensed and simplified. Even patents and utility models can fit into a small box. When you open it, the tools inside help you understand IP practically and engagingly,” Mr. Mugabe said.
He noted that the programme uses games and interactive tools to make learning relatable for entrepreneurs, students and communities. The current training builds on earlier sessions held for URSB staff, which prepared a strong team to support public outreach.
Mr. Mugabe also highlighted the recent IP in Schools (IP in Scholars) initiative, which involved over 25 schools, saying the training will help expand IP education to at least 27 schools nationwide.
He praised URSB partnership with WIPO, noting that the collaboration is helping turn IP into a practical tool for innovation, business growth and national development.
