Uganda Welcomes WIPO Director General Mr. Daren Tang on Three-Day Mission to Boost IP Landscape
Uganda warmly welcomed the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General, Mr. Daren Tang, who arrived on a three-day official mission from December 3rd to 5th, 2025. Accompanied by a delegation of senior WIPO officials, Mr. Tang engaged with government leaders, innovators, and key stakeholders to strengthen Uganda’s intellectual property (IP) ecosystem and position the country as a regional hub for innovation and creativity.
During his visit, Mr. Tang held high-level meetings at the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB). His engagements focused on enhancing the legal and regulatory frameworks that underpin IP protection, as well as exploring strategies to promote commercialization and youth empowerment.

The Director General praised Uganda’s progress in IP development, highlighting the country’s commitment to innovation through the establishment of 37 Technology and Innovation Support Centres (TISCs) and its recent registration of unique products such as the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon Coffee geographical indication. He emphasized the importance of integrating IP into national development plans to spur economic growth and job creation.
In addition to formal meetings, Mr. Tang participated in interactive exhibitions showcasing innovations by Ugandan students and entrepreneurs, demonstrating the vibrant creativity within the country’s youth.
Mr. Tang’s mission underscores WIPO’s commitment to supporting Uganda in harnessing IP as a catalyst for sustainable development, innovation-driven entrepreneurship, and global competitiveness in Africa’s growing knowledge economy.
