Ministry of Foreign Affairs: WIPO Director General Urges Uganda to Harness Intellectual Property for Economic Growth

During a high-level engagement at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Kampala on Thursday, 4 December, WIPO Director General Mr. Daren Tang urged the Ugandan government to invest strategically in intellectual property (IP) sectors such as science, technology, and innovation to stimulate economic growth and create high-value jobs.

Tang emphasized that IP is no longer just about legal formalities but has become a powerful catalyst for investment, entrepreneurship, and national development. He highlighted Uganda’s rich natural resources like shea butter and coffee, noting that intellectual property can unlock their full potential.

“We are assisting Uganda to register Rwenzori coffee, protect it, market it and also commercialize it as a premium reflecting the richness of your soil,” he said.

With 37 technology and innovation support centres across the country, Tang advised upgrading some into technical institutions focused on training and certification. This would promote commercialized research, new startups, and job creation, driving Uganda’s innovation ecosystem forward.

The meeting brought together top officials including the Registrar General of URSB, Mercy K. Kainobwisho, the Attorney General, Solicitor General, and URSB Board Chairperson to strengthen partnerships and prepare Uganda’s IP systems for the future.
