Attorney General, WIPO DG Chart New Path for Uganda’s Intellectual Property Future
Uganda’s Attorney General, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, has reaffirmed government’s commitment to transforming intellectual property (IP) into a cornerstone of national development during a high-level meeting with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Director General, Daren Tang, in Kampala.
Representing President Yoweri Museveni, mr. Kiryowa highlighted that Uganda’s long-standing ideological foundation, built on patriotism, Pan-Africanism, and socioeconomic transformation, is now being strengthened by a strategic shift toward commercialising intellectual property.

“WIPO is the agency that can help get our ideas to the market,” he said, noting that the value of IP lies not just in protection but in generating economic returns for innovators.
The WIPO Director General Mr. Daren Tang praised Uganda for its active role in WIPO’s global initiatives, including ratifying the Treaty on Genetic Resources. He also highlighted the upcoming launch of the IP in a Box initiative and applauded Uganda’s establishment of more than 37 Technology and Innovation Support Centres.
Mr. Tang further commended Uganda for advancing geographical indication protection, noting the certification of the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon Coffee as a unique national treasure.
The renewed partnership sets the stage for a stronger, innovation-driven future anchored in a modern, commercialised IP ecosystem.
