Legal Aid Clinic Marks 25 Years of Advancing Access to Justice

On 24th October 2024, the Legal Aid Clinic (LAC) celebrated its Silver Jubilee under the theme: “25 Years of Advancing Access to Justice through Legal Aid and Clinical Legal Aid Education.” The event brought together key stakeholders from the Judiciary, Government Ministries, Legal Aid Service Providers, Academia, Development Partners, Bar Course alumni, and other justice actors.

Namuddu Jacqueline, Senior Legal Officer, represented the Registrar General of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau at the celebrations. The event was graced by the Chief Justice, represented by the Acting Principal Judge, Hon. Justice Jane Okuo Kajuga, the Attorney General, Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka, the Chairperson of the LDC Management Committee, Hon. Justice Christopher Madrama-Izama (JSC), and the Chairperson of the Legal Aid Clinic, Hon. Lady Justice Eva Luswata-Kawuma (JCoA). Also present were Dr. Katja Kerschbaumer, Head of Office, Austrian Embassy and Chairperson of Justice Development Partners, and Dr. Pamela Tibihikirra Kalyegira, Director of LAC.

Established in 1998 under section 3(1) of the Law Development Centre Act, LAC provides free legal aid to indigent litigants and accused persons while training Bar Course students through clinical legal education. Over the years, the Clinic has strengthened the right to a fair hearing under Article 28 of the 1995 Constitution, set up legal aid clinics across Uganda, provided court-annexed mediators, and promoted juvenile diversion programs.

The LAC Chairperson thanked all justice actors, including the Uganda Registration Services Bureau, for their unwavering support in promoting access to justice and delivering legal services to marginalized communities nationwide.
