Turning Assets into Opportunity: URSB’s SIMPO Innovation shines at Microfinance AGM
At the forefront of financial innovation, the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) showcased its Security Interest in Movable Property Registry System (SIMPO) during the Annual General Meeting of the Association of Microfinance Institutions of Uganda (AMFIU) on June 27, 2025, at Mestil Hotel, Kampala.
This initiative aims to revolutionize access to credit for Uganda’s underserved communities, opening up new avenues for economic empowerment and growth.
For many small business owners, especially women and youth in Uganda, getting a loan has long meant hitting a dead end, not for lack of potential, but collateral. That’s the challenge URSB’s SIMPO is tackling head-on.
At the AMFIU AGM, Ms. Stellah K. Olimi, a legal officer with URSB, made a presentation on how SIMPO is revolutionizing access to affordable credit, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), women, and youth, key segments often underserved by traditional lending systems.
Ms. Olimi highlighted SIMPO’s critical role in promoting financial inclusion by allowing lenders to register security interests in movable property, reducing credit risk and loan turnaround times, enhancing transparency and trust in secured transactions, and providing legal backing to lenders in case of borrower default.
She also revealed that microfinance institutions alone account for 59% of all SIMPO registrations, totalling 29,405 out of 49,434 initial notices, a demonstration of growing impact.
