URSB Enforces Legal Action to Destroy Seized Counterfeit Products
On June 20th, the Compliance and Enforcement Unit of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) executed three court-sanctioned disposal operations to eliminate counterfeit goods that had long overstayed in the Bureau’s custody.
This effort involved the destruction of exhibits linked to the concluded cases: Uganda vs. Mukyala Christine, Uganda vs. Bonny Kinene, and Uganda vs. Johnson Agaba.
The trial magistrate mandated that the convicts cover the costs associated with the destruction of the counterfeit goods, which included 25 tons of HP cartridges. The destruction took place at the KCCA Buyala Landfill in Wakiso District, with a focus on environmental protection.
The URSB team ensured that these products were destroyed to prevent them from re-entering the market, thereby protecting consumers and preserving the integrity of trademarks.
Despite ongoing efforts to combat this issue, counterfeiting remains a persistent problem. The fight against counterfeit trade continues, as the institution remains vigilant in safeguarding consumers, enforcing intellectual property rights, and maintaining market integrity.
This destruction exercise serves as a public affirmation of the Uganda Registration Services Bureau’s commitment to enforcing intellectual property rights and promoting respect for these rights.
