From boardroom to baby bottles: Registrar General tips corporate women on the real balancing act

Balancing career, family and keeping homes intact in no mean feat, but can be seamless with proper planning and support, according to the Registrar General. At last Friday’s Women in Banking and Finance Conference, Ms. Mercy K. Kainobwisho, tackled the chaos head-on, delivering a powerful message about the importance of work-life balance for women in leadership.

She highlighted the unique challenges women face in juggling multiple roles, ranging from professionals to caregivers. This she said while addressing women under the theme “Accelerating Women’s Leadership and Influence in Banking and Finance, held at Protea Hotel, Kampala.

She articulated the unique challenges faced by women, stating, “We live in a space where we have so many responsibilities. Women face life in so many shapes, sizes, and colors.” This multifaceted existence
requires women to be “switched on 24/7,” balancing their corporate responsibilities with personal obligations.

The Importance of Family
“Never forget that family matters,” she urged.

The Registrar General reminded the over 200 women that while career advancement is essential, it should not come at the expense of family relationships. “We start with family, and we end with family,” she said, emphasising the need for women to prioritise their loved ones even amidst demanding work schedules.

To achieve a harmonious work-life balance, Ms. Kainobwisho offered several strategies, which included setting boundaries; Women should learn to say no, and
prioritise their commitments. Don’t take on too much; otherwise, it breaks you,” she advised.

This includes recognising when to step back from additional responsibilities to maintain mental and emotional wellbeing.

The Registrar General’s remarks at the Conference served as a clarion call for women to embrace their
multifaceted roles while striving for balance in their lives.
