Embracing Change: A roadmap to professional resilience
In a compelling presentation during the online Registrar General’s Fireplace last Friday, Mr. James Wasagami, URSB Manager Human Resource Management, shared profound insights into the dynamic nature of workplace transformation, offering a blueprint for professionals navigating uncertain career landscapes.
Drawing inspiration from the renowned book “Who Moved My Cheese?” Mr. Wasagami illuminated the various ways individuals respond to change. He identified four typical responses: “Sniff” (those who detect change early), “Scurry” (quick action-takers), “Hem” (change-resistant individuals), and “Haw” (adaptable learners).
“The only constant in an organisation is change,” Mr. Wasagami emphasised, highlighting that career paths are rarely linear. He shared a personal example of an executive director who transitioned to a senior officer role due to organisational restructuring, demonstrating that professional flexibility is key to survival.
The speaker stressed several critical strategies for managing change effectively: recognising change early, engaging stakeholders, developing clear strategies, and maintaining open communication. Importantly, he encouraged staff to move beyond fear, embrace new beliefs, and maintain integrity in the workplace.
Mr. Wasagami’s key message resonated clearly: change is inevitable, but with the right mindset, nothing is impossible. By remaining adaptable, continuously learning, and maintaining a positive outlook, professionals can transform challenges into opportunities for growth.
“The best way to adapt to change is to embrace change,” he concluded, offering a powerful mantra for career resilience in today’s dynamic work environment.
