Justice Minister pledges Uganda’s continued collaboration with ARIPO
Hon. Norbert Mao, Uganda’s Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, addressed a delegation from URSB at the African Regional Intellectual Property Organisation (ARIPO) in Harare, emphasising the transformative role of intellectual property (IP) in Africa’s development.
Hon. Mao expressed his gratitude to ARIPO’s Director General, Mr. Bemanya Twebaze, for hosting the Ugandan team and engaging in discussions crucial to the growth of IP on the continent.
The minister highlighted the potential of IP to promote innovation, creativity, and economic growth across Africa. He stressed that IP is not just a legal framework but a tool for empowerment, driving growth, and securing the future of citizens.
With Africa brimming with talent and creativity, Mao emphasised the importance of prioritising the protection and promotion of IP rights to support inventors, artists, entrepreneurs, and businesses.
The Ugandan government has made significant strides in strengthening its IP systems, including reforms to align IP laws with international standards, combating challenges such as digital piracy, and investing in the Uganda Registration Services Bureau (URSB) to improve IP services.
Hon. Mao also pointed to the National Innovation Fund, which supports innovators and researchers in bridging the gap between ideas and market entry.
Looking forward, Hon. Mao urged continued collaboration with ARIPO to tackle emerging challenges such as digital piracy, traditional knowledge protection, and climate change.
